Case study: Mr Chippy

Mr Chippy is a renowned and much-loved fish and chip shop located in the heart of York, just off St Sampson’s Square, on Church Street. With a history spanning 23 years, Mr Chippy was founded by York locals, Andrew and Rowena Periclenus in May 2001, bringing decades of catering and kitchen management expertise from working at some of York’s most exclusive venues including York Minster, The National Railway Museum and the Treasurer’s House.

As soon as Andrew laid his eyes on a closed down chippy on one of York’s busiest streets, he saw the opportunity to deliver great fish and chips and fantastic customer service and the rest is history!
Like many businesses in York city centre, Mr Chippy’s internet connection had always been a nightmare. A fast and reliable internet connection was increasingly needed to ensure that the takeaway ran smoothly on a daily basis, from point of sale to CCTV, staffing systems and the digital menu which can be updated by the team on a daily basis.

Most importantly, Mr Chippy needed a strong internet connection for their Deliveroo sales, an area of the business that grew massively during the pandemic and now sees more than 40% of sales coming through the wifi-connected device.

The takeaway’s former broadband connection struggled to manage all of the devices, with lagging, drop-outs and slow speeds becoming a daily occurrence, causing reduced online sales and huge frustrations for Andrew and his team.

Andrew switched Mr Chippy’s broadband connection to Fastr in 2020 and immediately noticed a huge difference in speed, going from 11 Mbps to 150 Mbps. Now the chippy’s systems can run smoothly and efficiently meaning the team can focus on providing the great customer service and delicious fish & chips that they’re known for!

Speaking of Fast Broadband, Andrew said: ““As a city, we are on the world stage and attract visitors every day from all over the region, the country and the world. Historically, however it has been the city’s internet connection that has limited many businesses like ours.

Joining Fastr Broadband has been a breath of fresh air and means we were able to expand our business and bring in additional revenue streams from Deliveroo, which now accounts for over 40% of our sales. Without a strong internet, we simply wouldn’t be able to use their order system as well as keeping in store customers happy with speedy efficient service through our point-of-sale system, digital menu and even our credit card machines.

Fastr has to be the way forward for York’s city centre businesses to operate smartly and efficiently in the digital age.”
